Date Treats

Balls of energy, or possibly your newest guilty pleasure?  They're date-y, not too sweet and have lovely undertones of cinnamon, vanilla, hazelnut and cranberry.  And thats about it.  Food Process 'em, roll 'em, and eat 'em.  They're whatever you want them to be and take no time to make.

I don't have all that much to say about them.  They're good, sort of like a treat, but definitely great for all-the-time.  Not something you can really overindulge on.  Just a great snack, dessert, maybe even breakfast?  Best of all, they're good for you!  Perfect for Ten in 10, Primal Stride, or just the new year =D.

Date Treats
An original recipe by Lauren of Celiac Teen
Ingredients
1 cup dates, very firmly packed (about 250 g)
1/2 cup hazelnuts
1/4 cup dried cranberries
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 tsp cinnamon

Steps
1. Place all ingredients in a food processor fitted with the steel blade and process.
2. Roll into balls.
3. Enjoy!

Note: Make sure there aren't any pits in your dates!

Try just one!

Or you can eat them all ;D.

They're a lovely little treat, and I'm planning on having them with soup.  When we do soup in my house, we each chose our favourites, heat them up, and serve with cheese and crackers.  These will complement all of those flavours perfectly so I can't wait to try it =D.

Hope everyone is enjoying 2010!  I've been leisurely enjoying the days before the busyness of school and final exams starts back up =D.

xoxo

Yum Yum! I just tried Amy's Raw Date Truffles from Simply Sugar and Gluten Free, and now I see these? I could get used to making date and nut balls of all sorts! I am digging your hazelnut and cranberries in here.

I just skipped over here from Seth's pc challenge, and I'm so glad I did. I had been thinking about looking into reducing gluten and learning more about it...and here, your blog virtually fell into my lap. I'd like to follow.

The snack balls look great...a definite try.

Oooh. I wonder what my three year old would think of these. They look like a great snack.

I would like to try one! We just bought a big bag of prunes, I wonderful if I could substitute them for the dates?

Lauren said...

@Barbara I don't know if I've ever had a prune, but if you enjoy their taste plain, then I'm sure they would work beautifully!

Yum delicious!

I want to try some. My sister is the bomb at making gluten-free vegan delicious dishes. I'll pass along the recipe and hope she makes some for me.

I always end up putting things in the blender/processor for too long. =(

I have all the ingredients except hazelnuts ... may have to substitute. I love that they are naturally sweetened and don't cause one to overindulge. :-) I hope you won't get upset when I say that they look like my porcupine meatballs before I cook them. ;-)

Thanks, Lauren!

These look fabulous! I posted Raw Date Truffles over the holidays and I agree that they're perfect for anytime, though they can be presented in a way that makes them stunning. Thanks for linking to Slightly Indulgent Tuesdays!

I think I'll try these!

A quick question: what nuts do you buy? I know to stay away from bulk, but I'm also worried about what brands I can trust as packages often say "processed in a plant... may contain traces of wheat..." What brands do you think are safe?

Lauren said...

@lazygfchef Well I often buy in bulk, and brand-wise, just what my mom picks up. I've never worried about nuts, but maybe I should! It never crossed my mind.

I have some dates I need to use. I don't have these exact ingredients, but I could try something similar. Thanks for the inspiration! These are pretty close to a cookie. I'd love for you to link to it from "What can I eat that's gluten free?"

I will have to try these. I need to get away from all the butter and sugar and try something a little healthier. Thanks for sharing.
